Välkommen till Olle Elgenmarks musikvärld
Welcome to the music that Olle Elgenmark gave us

PRESENTATION OF THE COMPOSER
Olle Elgenmark was born in Stockholm in 1936 and received his musical education there. Before and during his time at The Royal College of Music in Stockholm Elgenmark studied harmony (composition) with Henry Lindroth (1910–1993) and organ with Alf Linder (1907–1983). Lindroth in particular had a significant influence on Elgenmark’s development as a composer. Elgenmark was organist of Hjorthagen church in Stockholm from 1965 until he was appointed organist of the Matteus church in Norrköping in 1968, a post which he held until his retirement in 2001.
As a teenager Elgenmark often visited several of Stockholm's central city churches to listen to different organists and their playing and these opportunities were highly educational and inspiring for him. Not least Otto Olsson at the Gustaf Vasa church who became a significant role model and source of inspiration for Elgenmark.
Elgenmark began early to primarily appreciate the Romantic sound world and its aesthetics. He became faithful to these ideals for his whole life, something that was rarely accepted during the 50s, 60s and 70s when modernism in its different forms was still regarded as the only acceptable way forward. Elgenmark often mentioned composers who were sources of inspiration and role models. Amongst these were Charles-Marie Widor, Alexandre Guilmant, Edward Elgar, Herbert Howells, Sigfrid Karg-Elert, Oskar Lindberg and not least Otto Olsson as mentioned above.
The composer had a particular liking for the British organ scene, both the instruments and the repertoire. He strikingly often used English stop names and manual indications as well as sometimes giving his pieces English titles.
Elgenmark composed almost continuously from his late teenage years until his death in 2016. His works were mainly for church use, as well as songs, choral works and the grand Christmas Oratorio. In addition there are six Organ Symphonies and a large number of chorale preludes for solo organ. At the time of his death he was working on several new projects including two Organ Symphonies.
